A thank you to Upper Mead

The team here at Upper Mead are dedicated to offering the very best care possible and when families and loved ones take the time to share their thoughts with us, we are incredibly grateful. We recently heard from Dee, whose husband Chris was recently cared for at Upper Mead. She shares her thoughts here:

“After spending two months in hospital, my husband Chris came to Upper Mead for palliative care. We had the choice of three different care homes, but there was something special about Upper Mead from the get-go. It had such a warm, welcoming feeling, and it immediately felt right for both of us.

What stood out most was the people. The staff are truly the heart of the home. Every nurse and carer showed such kindness, compassion and understanding. They not only cared for Chris, but also looked after our whole family during a very emotional time.

Chris’ care needs could sometimes be challenging, but the team always approached everything with patience, professionalism and genuine warmth. Nothing ever seemed too much trouble. There is a real family atmosphere at Upper Mead, and that was evident in everything they did.

Chris had a very long day before arriving at the home, and I will never forget how caring and supportive everyone was when we arrived. The team made sure we were all comfortable, bringing tea and coffee for the family and offering reassurance when we needed it most. It was those thoughtful little touches that made such a difference.

Chris was a former Army officer who had led a very active life, working as a physical training instructor and diver before becoming a Health and Safety Consultant. The staff took the time to get to know the man behind the care needs. They made him feel valued, respected and completely at home.

There were so many acts of kindness during Chris’ time at Upper Mead. One weekend marked our 40th wedding anniversary, and the team arranged for a card and flowers from Chris to me. It was such a thoughtful gesture and meant the world to us. We also wanted to spend some special time together at a local restaurant, and the staff did everything they could to support us and make that possible.

Chris passed away at the age of 70, and throughout his time at Upper Mead everyone treated him with such gentleness, dignity and care. Knowing he was surrounded by people who genuinely cared brought us enormous comfort.

I cannot recommend Upper Mead highly enough. The kindness, dedication and compassion shown by every member of the team will stay with our family forever, and we will always be grateful for the care and support they gave to Chris and to all of us.”
